The parent/caregiver has the option of receiving names from our universal list of possible relief workers able to provide support in the parent/caregiver’s home environment. The family/caregiver may also select their own worker but the worker will be requested to go through the screening process of SDS Respite Services. This screening process includes an application form, Vulnerable Person/Police Record Check (updated every three years), references, code of confidentiality and the person must be 16 years or older to register. The caregiver may opt to not have their worker screened through SDS Respite Services at which time they will sign a waiver which relieves SDS of any legal responsibility surrounding the relief work. The advantages to in-home respite, include, but are not limited to, retained family and client routines and relationships, familiar surroundings, quiet and easy access to any special equipment required for the person’s needs, and little or no dependence on transportation.
